Downloading / Installing Linux
CentOS is an Enterprise-class Linux Distribution derived from sources
freely provided to the public by a prominent North American Enterprise Linux
vendor. CentOS conforms fully with the upstream vendor's redistribution policy
and aims to be 100% binary compatible. (CentOS mainly changes packages to remove
upstream vendor branding and artwork.) CentOS is free.
System Requirements
- CentOS 4.4, 4.5, and 4.6 x86 Distro (x64 OS not supported)
- Minimum Intel Pentium-III class processor
- 1 GB RAM
- Dedicated internet connection (for installation and upgrades) with static IP
- FQDN (fully qualified domain name), i.e. sputnik.yoursitename.com, mapped to an Internet routable IP address
Obtaining CentOS
Download CentOS 4.4 from http://vault.centos.org/4.4/isos/i386/
Only the first install disk is needed since only * minimal * install will be performed.
Installing CentOS
- Burn the image to CD and boot from CD.

At the boot prompt, type "linux text" to perform a text based install.
- Accept defaults and proceed with installation.

Choose "Custom" install type. Custom type will allow *minimal* installation configuration.
- Partition the disk as desired.

Configure networking.

*DISABLE* firewall.

*DISABLE* SELinux.
-
*UNSELECT* all packages.
- Proceed to complete the installation.
